What you'll cover

Eight short lessons + a 20-question knowledge check + the live observation checklist your assessor will work through with you on the equipment.

01

What a VOC is — and isn't

Definition in the regulator's own words, the WHS Reg 2017 cl 39 duty it discharges, and the four-stage VOC process (unit reference, performance, knowledge, conditions). Contractor / labour-hire options and why a stat dec is "not preferred".

02

Your DG Licence Scope

Verbatim Safe Work Australia DG scope. When a dogger is required and when slinging is not dogging work. Dual licence path — DG, RB, RI or RA. 3D equipment catalogue refresher.

03

Pre-Use Inspection

Spot the defect on chain slings, synthetic slings, shackles, hooks and wire rope. The >10% hook throat opening withdrawal rule. Tag, quarantine, escalate.

04

AS 3775 Sling Angles + Load Weight

Canonical factors — 0° = 1.00, 60° = 1.73, 90° = 1.41, 120° = 1.00, >120° prohibited. Density × volume formulae with worked examples. Live calculator embedded.

05

Hand, Whistle & Radio Signals

AS 2550 signals — when to use each, the whistle pattern code (Hoist, Lower, Boom Up/Down, Slew, Jib, Stop, E-Stop), radio pre-start.

06

Hazards on Your Site

Powerline approach distances (3/6/8 m), exclusion zones (drop / swing / tail-swing), ground, wind, visibility — stop-the-lift triggers.

07

Directing a Lift — Capstone

Plan, prep, direct, land. Full lift decision-tree scenario walking the same path your assessor will probe — test lift, angle check, comms loss, weather, landing.

08

Ready Check + Observation Preview

Exactly what your assessor will be watching for. The four supervision-level outcomes (Direct / Periodic / Minimal / None). What gets recorded on the VOC certificate.

Then — the live observation

Passing the 20-question knowledge check is one half of the VOC. The other half is the live observation: your assessor (PCBU, supervisor or licensed dogger) watches you perform a complete lift on real plant against a checklist mapped to CPCCLDG3001 Elements 1–5.

Lesson 1.8 walks through the entire observation checklist so there are no surprises on the day.
